red mail Roddy Kiely or Roderick Kealy
I hope someone with Dunmore connections can help me. I'm trying to find out about a story my great grandmother Julia Concannon told in 1945 just a few months before she died (she was 93 and a little confused at the time). Is there any truth in this story? I can't find any record of it anywhere. This is what my great grandmother said about an incident that happened some time in the 1800's: ''Roddy Kiely of Carrowkeel was a most severe agent for Blakes of Carraroe. He once summoned a hungry man for pulling one turnip. Local people killed and tarred (???) cattle on Roddys farm from time to time in revenge. Apparently they blackened their faces to avoid recognition. A servant girl who worked for Roddy Kiely was joking a servant boy of same, and blackened his face one night with polish. He is said to have had no connection with the cattle stealing. He was arrested shortly after leaving Kielys and later convicted and hanged. Kiely was called as a witness for the defence, and he said that the only character he could give him was that his mother once stole a turkey from him; some people say she stole it in hunger--- others say she did not steal it at all. All, however, blame Roddy for his death, as he was in a position to clear him, and they (then?) that as a punishment for this, his tyrannical career was ended by a fall from his carriage outside my great grandfathers house in Carantrila''. Any information at all about this episode would be helpful.
