red mail Mary Squire, widow of Walworth, Surrey d. 1797
I am researching Mary Squire who built and endowed six almshouses in Church End, Walthamstow in 1795, as a personal local history research project. I am intrigued by the plaque on the almshouses! On it her name is spelled 'Squires'. I would dearly love to find out more about her and her family. As per her will her nephew-in-law was called William Squire, a Haberdasher apprentice to a Mrs Blakesley in Mark Lane, London. His sister was called Elizabeth, married name Cook/Cooke. Their father was Thomas Squire, coach wheelwright, bp 1728, Walthamstow, mother: Elizabeth nee Couton/Cowton, Thomas's father was William Squire, farmer, buried 1744 Walthamstow, mother: Elizabeth. Thomas' older brother William Squire, bp 1724, may be Mary's husband? He was a box maker and died 1763 in the parish of St. Dunstan in the East, City of London. His will was witnessed by Walthamstow/Leyton residents. He left everything to his wife Mary. Mary was buried in St Mary's, Walthamstow although she lived in Walworth/Newington, Surrey from at least 1782. A Richard Mills from Morden was a cousin to the Squires. I cannot identify the record of their marriage (and with that her maiden name) although I checked hundreds of parish registers. If anyone can help or give me some advice I would be very grateful.
