red mail Great Hall Bentley Nursing/Maternity Home
Having recently researched my family tree surname LAST i haev discovered that the Great Hall Bentley where my father was born in 1928 was run as a private nursing/maternity hall. As i understand it ladies went there to give birth the children they they did not want/could not keep etc. It was apparently used mostly by performers including actors, singers, thespians and cost 6 guineas a week then - which was a huge amount of money then so was used by people with money. I have found this out via a local historian in St Osyth Essex who is familiar with the area and history and is a font of knowledge. I was out onto her via the reverand at St Osyth Church.
