They were the sons of a Martin Grout (born 1740) but apart from the marriage of John to a Sarah Downs in this parish in 1792(no record of any children) nothing further can be found of these two other brothers. Did they reach adulthhood or die at an early age. Any information would be appreciated.

Joseph was illegitimate and stated in a Parish Examination at Aveley that he was born in Great Bardfield. He married and spent almost all his life in Aveley, Essex in the parish of St Michael's until the examination forced him into the Union Workhouse in Orsett where he died. He married Mary Ann Regwell and had 11 children, ALEXANDER THOMAS, ELIZABETH ANN, JOSEPH, ALEXANDER ROBERT, JOHN, WILLIAM, BENJAMIN, ELIZA, JESSE HENRY, BETSY AND JESSE BUTTON.

Has anyone any connection to the Woollard (Woolard or Wollard) family of Great Bardfield. Have some information to share. Susan Woollard Married Frederick Green and settled in Dartford, Kent. The are my 2 or 3 times gr grandparents.

Thomas COLE (c 1825-1900) from Great Bardfield, son of Samuel COLE, carpenter, married Charlotte POTTER of Coggeshall, Exeter (c 1829-1884), daughter of Sarah and Thomas POTTER, also a carpenter, in 1849. They lived in the London area (Shoreditch, Bethnal Green and Hackney) where they had at least seven children: Charlotte Bella (later SAUNDERS) (1851-1934), William (b. c. 1853), Thomas (b. c 1855), Sarah Ann (b. 1859), Harry (b. 1861), Kate (b. 1862) and Florence (b. 1867). Thomas worked in sales. There is a family story that one of the boys became a court hairdresser. If you have any information about this family, please contact me. I have some census records as well as a few marriage and birth certificates to share.

George Hills and his wife Mary nee Undershell had a large family at Great Bardfield from 1780 to the early 19th century. The Undershells were an important family of London tanners and I suspect George Hills was connected with the trade.His son George became a London tanner, another son Thomas Bryant Hills was a London Corn factor.

My Ruse family ancestors occupied Pitley Farm, Great Bardfield for most of the 19th century and probably earlier. Joseph Ruse was born in about 1770. I have found no sign of the Ruses since. Any pointers gratefully received.

My great, great, great grandfather, Arnold Thorne was (according to the 1881 census) born in Great Bardfield, Essex c. 1831/1832. Have only found reference to one church, St Mary the Virgin, but no luck so far in locating baptism record. Is/was thisthe only church there? He was a Bootmaker and at some point moved to North London.
