MANN
William MANN married Elizabeth SCOTT in Houghton-le-Spring in 1840. The couple spent the latter half of the 19th century in Great Lumley and a number of children whose known names were Margaret (my 2g grandmother, ROBINSON), George, John, Ann, Michael, Joseph and Elizabeth. I'd be delighted to hear from anyone who has connections with this family or has any information.
red mail WILLIAM COATES family of Lumley, 1800's
MY mother believed her mother's family came from Lumley, Co. Durham. Her mother is shown on marriage licence of June 1902 as Bertha Annie COATES, who married Thomas TAYLOR at Tudhoe Grange. Bertha Coates father is given as WILLIAM COATES, deceased, Engine Driver. I have not been able to trace him or his family roots. Bertha Annie Coates has no birth record in that name for her birth year of 1879 in Co. Durham where she was born. However Bertha had a brother, George Coates, and a sister 'Minnie' Coates. There is a family at Cornforth Co. Durham on the 1881 Census shown as Mary Ann Mullen, Head; George Coates, Son age 7; Mary Mullen,Dau.,age 4; Bertha H. Mullen, Dau., age 2. An 'A' can easily be mistaken for an 'H'. Bertha lived with her husband and children at Tudhoe, Merrington, Ferryhill, and possibly Darlington too. Bertha died in 1923, age 43/44 yrs. I am trying to trace the WILLIAM COATES ancestor who married Bertha's mother Mary Ann before she met and married a John Mullin (or Mullen) and lived at Cornforth. I'd like to hear from anyone researching COATES family 1850's - 1900's at Lumley or surrounding area. Thank you.
