red mail John Henry Drew & the Training Ship Cumberland
Tracing the history of John Henry Drew (and wife Ann Elizabeth, m.s. Leatherby/Letherby) who moved his family from Torpoint, Cornwall on retirement from the R.N. in 1876, to Row (Rhu) in order to take up a post as Instructor/Gunnery Instructor on the Training Ship Cumberland. Two children, Hedley Wilmot and Frederick Samuel were born in Row (Rhu) at 4 Cumberland Terrace. The burning of the training ship in 1889 prompted their removal to Glasgow where they lived at 25 Regent Moray Street (1891 Census) and then 56 Old Kelvinhaugh Road (death certificates). Seeking more information on their time in Row (Rhu) and on the descendants of their 9 children.
red mail Aulay McKinlay
I am looking for the parents and family of Aulay McKinlay my Gr Gr Grandfather. He was born in Row, Dumbarton about 1807. Aulay moved to Glasgow (maybe the family moved too) and in 1830 he married in Glasgow Jean Chalmers b 1809, parents James Chalmers and Susanna Calder. Aulay was a Woollen Merchant/Draper/Hosier according to the 1841 and 1851 census records. In 1841 he lived at Duke Street, Glasgow and there was a Mary McKinlay living with the family who was 5 years older than Aulay so I presume she was his sister. In 1851 they were living at 233 High Street, Glasgow and had two medical students boarding with them, Daniel MacAulay and William Stewart both born in Ireland. I have assumed that Aulay's parents were James or John McKinlay and Mary McAulay as these are the names of his first and second born sons and daughter. The children of Aulay and Jean (sometimes called Jane) were James Chalmers, John, Mary McAulay, Alexander, George, Aulay, Thomas Chalmers, and Gilbert Tennant. Four other children had died before 1841, they were Susan, Robert, Jane and Jessie. Aulay (snr), John and Alexander moved to Australia in 1853 and the rest of the family followed in 1855. They lived in Ballarat, Victoria and in other goldmining towns around the area. Aulay died in 1865 and Jean in 1889.
