red mail Hand, John - (Affpuddle - Dorset)
John Hand born in Dorset, England mid 1870's, went to Cape Freels, Newfoundland around 1790. Died there 1824. Wife's name not known. Children: William born approx. 1798, John 1800, Mary 1805 & Silas 1813. My distant family continues to live in the Wesleyville area of NFLD and Toronto, Ontario. Hand changed to Hann around 1850. I found a John Hand born 1776) of Wm & Elizabeth (Betty or Betsy) (nee Symonds) Hand of Affpuddle, Dorset. John is the only child listed on the Latter Day Saints site, that doesn't have any death/burial info for this family. All of the other children have full info. This makes me believe that this John Hand could be the one. I think there isn't any death/burial info in England, because he left England and moved to Cape Freels, NFLD. I'm hoping this is my relative and the connection between England and Newfoundland. There is a James Spicknell of Cape Freels (1845) that came from Ringwood, Hampshire, England that married Mary Hand. If John Hand of Affpuddle is the link, than Mary (Hand) Spicknell, would be his granddaughter. My mother was a Hann at birth. St. Osmund, Melbury Osmond Church/Cemetery is mentioned often on the web for this particular Hand family. Other places in NFLD that Hand (Hanns) lived are: Cole Harbour & Greenspond, Bonne Bay, Pinchard's and Swain's Island. The men were builders (boat) and fishermen. So John could have come over on a fishing vessel. Cemetery records of Cape Freels shows their church would have been Church of England/Anglican or Methodist & Salvation Army.

One of the many little villages used by Isaac GULLIVER for his smuggling. Kinson St Andrews was one of the many hiding places for contraband. Augustus JOHN, who lived down the road at Alderney, before WW1, is said to have frequented the (old) Bear Cross Inn, which my ggrandfather Edwin LANE ran 1884/5 till 1894. After this my ggrandmother Elizabeth ran the Inn, but her youngest son Frank soon took over, and was beer retailer until 1914. Frank then ran a very early garage. Bear Cross and the areahave been very badly developed. Most of the older buildings have been torn down, though Pelhams, a lovely Georgian house, is still standing, and used as a community centre. The church is still there!

Edith was born in 1901 /1902 in Berkshire. She was the daughter of Edith Clark and Sidney Green. In 1911 she was living in Wales but by 1912 she was in Gloucester where her mother died and Edith may have spent a period of time in Ross workhouse before her father took her to Blandford. Her father Sidney worked on a farm either before enlisting in the army (WW1) or shortly after his discharge . Edith (known as Rose) was in service and I believe she worked for a retired engineer in Blandford. Edith had 3 sisters:- Matilda, Susan and Emily (known as Violet). DAVIDGE families in Cann, Dorset - (Cann - Dorset)
Seeking information on family of William DAVIDGE b.c.1790 m. Harriet BUGDEN b.c. 1795 and their children. According to one family tree, they had 11 children: Elizabeth, Jesse,Eliza, John(d.age 0), Louisa, John b.abt. 1829, Jane, Charlotte, George, Leah, Amelia. My 3x great-grandfather, John DAVIDGE emigrated to Newfoundland 'as a servant to Uncle John MATTHEWS', probably as a very young boy, likely b. around 1829. His older sister, Elizabeth might have gone with him. With a Kate VATCHER attached to this tree, it would be very likely that one of her seagoing relatives or a MATTHEWS, BAGG, ANDERSON, or other seasonal fisherman known to the DAVIDGE family who would have transported John on one of their seasonal fishing ships to John MATTHEWS in Burgeo. I would welcome any information on this John DAVIDGE. I have learned that there appear to have been two John DAVIDGE families in Cann during the same time period. The one where a son and father both named John DAVIDGE and both with occupations as bricklayers does not appear to be the right one as the tree owner states that no one from this family is known to have emigrated. Thanks for any info you might have -will share any relevant descendancy info with anyone who can help find our John Davidge. Sharon
