red mail Benjafield
Our Benjafield line started in Motcombe. We have a copy of Lady Theodora Grosvenor's book, 1867, called Motcombe: Past and Present, which mentions the Benjafields as originating in the area (actually Gillingham, just north). Susannah Hunt is in our rather voluminous family tree. The Benjafield name is a variant of Bengerville, again just north, and the Benjafield farm is still extant there, at Peacemarsh. In the 1813 ordnance survey the farm that is still called Benjafield's farm was named Bengerville. In my research I found that Walter Scammell, John de Bengerville and one other (sorry can't recall) were 'vergers for King John' at his hunting lodge. They did indeed 'perambulate' the forest there for him. I.e., mark it out. Very earlydocumentation indicates the Joachim de Bereneger was the forefather of this line. (which suggests french/Hastings lineage) However, since all this precedes routine registrations..... ??? But indeed Susannah Hunt is a name connected to ours, and LadyTheodora Grosvener/Guest's book is in all major Dorset librarys/archives, and thankfully confirms the Benjafied derivation. Gail
