My husband and I will be in the UK this summer and plan to visit Lyme Regis. My great-grandfather's family immigrated from there to the U.S. in 1855. I would like to know how to find out if any family gravestones are standing in the parish churchyard. Does anyone have a connection with these families? red mail HENRY KERBEY BORN @ 1789 Lyme Regis
Henry was the brother of Ann born @ 1785 and Harriett born @ 1787. Their parents were John Kerbey (Lyme Regis) and Ann Gibbs (West Monkton, SOM). Looking for any further information about Henry and the family. Ann Kerbey married John Whitby from Yeovil and Harriett married Abraham Beavis from Exmouth area.
Abraham Beavis was born Withycombe Raleigh (Exeter) in 1792 and married (early 1800's) Harriet Kirby born Lyme Regis, Dorset about 1784. According to 1841 Census several children were born in Sidmouth but one - Mary Beavis born @ 1819 appears not to be recorded though on 1841 Census for Yeovil, Somerset she is found at the address of John and Ann (nee Kirby) Whitby. The information held is that Mary may have been "adopted" by John and Ann and her name became Mary Ann Kirby Beavis. She married Ebenezer Whitby in 1848. Had she married after 1851, the Census may have revealed the relationship. Looking for any information on - a) Beavis connection with Sidmouth b) Kirby connection with Lyme Regis and Sidmouth. Information on Abraham Beavis's family name is available on IGI

red mail Lyme Regis: Hotel/pub
Hello Just after WW2 I stayed with distant relatives at a hotel, or large pub in Lyme Regis that was owned by distant relatives. All that I recall is that it was very close to the railway station. I've trawled the tourism websites, but do not recognise any of the hotel/pub names, it may have changed its name or closed. Can anyone make any suggestions, please? Andrew

red mail Hodders from Lyme Regis
Seeking info on the Hodder family from Lyme Regis. My great grandfather was Alfred William Hodder born 1851 Lyme Regis, married Elizabeth Henrietta Jeffries Wellington born 1850, Poole, Devon on 28 Dec 1871 at Seaton, Devon. Alfred's father was John Hodder born 1804 or 1807 or 1811 Uplyme and his mother was Elizabeth Hoare born 1812 Axminster, Devon. Alfred William and Elizabeth emigrated to New Zealand in 1873 with one son Alfred who died on the voyage. They had 3 more sons Arthur William Wellington born 1874 Ashburton, New Zealand; Frederick Herbert born 1876 Ashburton and Henry Alfred born 1878, Ashburton. Alfred William's wife Elizabeth died in 1878 in NZ and he later married Hannah Maria Groves born 1862 Hook Norton, Oxfordshire, in 1882 in Ashburton, New Zealand. Arthur, Frederick Herbert (Bert) and Henry (Harry) were brought back to England by cousin Keturah Rugg after their mother's death and brought up by their grandparents John and Elizabeth and other family members. Bert became a coach driver in northern England we have heard. Harry lived all his married life in the Exmouth area. Alfred William was to return to England too but married Hannah instead and had 10 more children in NZ. Arthur returned to NZ to live when grown and married but Bert and Harry never returned to NZ or saw their father again. Think John Hodder's father was James Hodder and mother Amey Snell but not sure. Would love to have contact with anyone else working on this Hodder family or who think they may have ties to it.
