red mail Sir William Macartney death 1867 Buncrana, Macartney marriage to Moss 1852 ......
I am looking for information about the late William and his wife, having died at the "Glebe" late July 1867. I have a copy of a copy of a letter sent to a Mrs Metcalf (was Eliza Macartney? - McCartney as in marriage records, then Moss married 1852, 2 children, William Tennant & Marion Macartney ((Moss)) {husband, Christopher Tennant died Crimea War 1855}, Eliza remarried Robert Metcalf 1860), and of any information of Eliza Macartney, William and Marion. Marion married 1877 in Qld Australia, and William married 1879 in NSW Australia. I know a large amount of information re William, and still learning of Marion. Anyway back to the letter, written 29 Jul 1867 by a John Taylor (Sir William's valet, manservant?) written from "Line Fort" who tells of, to Mrs Metcalf (Sir William's daughter) the last few days of Sir William's life, John Taylor "saw to" the old gentleman, washed, shaved and suitably dressed in a "nice" coffin .... Sir William was buried in "poor Mr Harry's" grave, whose remains had not been in the least disturbed". "His funeral was large and reseptable and in the presence of Mr King from Prahan Victoria Aust who visited your Papa previous to his death, read the funeral Service". Where was Sir William buried? Who was "poor Mr Harry"? Any newspaper cuttings etc of the time covering this? When and what ship did William & Marion (and perhaps the Metcalf's) come to Australia? Mrs Metcalf was my husband's grandpa Moss's mother according to my sis-in-law who has the letter. Hope I haven't rambled on too much, Dale
