On the tombstone of Thomas and Elizabeth in the Winkleigh cemetery is a notation of Johns' death in Newstead, Australia. Looking for any information, photos, people connected to family etc. Raine

I believe they had 8 children from 1823-1840, William, Elizabeth, Mary, James, Anne, George, Susan & Martha. Her father James SAMPSON was born in 1794 to William SAMPSON & Grace JOSELING.

Shoplands are known to have been in Winkleigh during the 1830 - 1840 times. Charity SHOPLAND of Wembworthy married John PILLMAN of Winkleigh on 15th March 1836. ANY information on any SHOPLANDS will be welcome. I would like to know what happened to John & Charity as I can't find them after the marriage.

looking for Sampson's from the Winkleigh, Devon. Richard (b:1840 - d:1882) he married Penelope Dunn 18/08/1864 at Winkleigh, Devon they moved to Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire. Richard joined the Gloucestershire Police (1864). Richard Sampson's parents were Richard (b:1812-d:1881) and Elizabeth Mitchel (b:1820-d:1903) Elizabeth's parents were Samuel Mitchel & Elizabeth Rowe, in the 1851 census Richard & Elizabeth were living at the Almshouse, Winkleigh, Devon. It has Richard snr working as an Agricultural Labourer, there were 5 children living at home, Richard (1840), William (1842), Margaret or Mary Ann (1844), Grace (1846) married William Parker, Ellen (b:1848 - d:1855), then they had the following children Eliza (1853), Sarah (1855) she married a Elon Crocker cir 1880 and Thomas (1857) he married Eliza Ellen Hocking in 1878 and emigrated to New Zealand. Elizabeth Sampson (Mitchel) was living in the Torquay area in the 1901 census, she was aged 80 and living with Sarah Crocker (her daughter) and family. Penelope Sampson's (b:1844-d:1916) parents were George Dunn and Maria Arnold, they were living at the poor house at Winkleigh in 1851. Penelope is in the 1901 census under the name Penelope Turner (Widow), living with daughter Dora and son in law Wm Sharpe at Acre Street, Stroud, Glouc.
