red mail Wanting to find a Dancer Please
I am trying to find my great aunt Elsie as she was a dancer and she used to live at 7 Upton Road,Torquay around 1916/1918. My Aunt may also have been known as Jessie. She may have entertained the troops at some stage(unknown just hearsay) She married a man from the NZEF (New Zealand Expeditory Forces.)and they were married in 1918. My aunt came to New Zealand but she was here for only 5 months and then returned home to England im sorry her name was Jessie Elsie Stapples or Staples not sure of exact spelling, she returned to England as its believed that she was homesick as she didnt have any family here apart from her husband,my great uncle Harry. His name was a real weird one as i thought it sounded like a girls name when i first heard it when younger as Harries thinking it was Harriet but it wasnt but he was known by that name(Harries Wade Brown) My aunt was said to be a wonderful dancer in her time i would love to know what she was all about ,her family, siblings.parents etc. I have a bit of information from family members about Uncle Harry so please if anyone can help me to find anything out about my great aunt i would love to know(there could be cousins i never heard of etc) Thanks

Before my Mum married my Dad she was engaged to the above mentioned who whilst serving with the 1st Battalion Manchester Regiment in Hong Kong during WW2 was captured by the Japanese and out aboard one of their so callede " HELL SHIPS", The Lisbon Maru, bound for a POW Camp either in that country or on one of their neighborring islands. Unfortunately en route it was spotted by an American submarine "THE SS GROUPER " who attacked it with a torpedo and subsequently sinking it not knowing there were some 2,000 POW's on board. When attacked the Japanese captain ordered the holds to be fastened down and locked with the POW's inside. If any of Cyril's family or relatives are still alive I would be most grateful if they could contact me through Curious Fox.

red mail Fontes - Mrs M.). Froyle House, Torquay
I'm trying to trace the history of my car - a 2-seat RILEY tourer, number OD 1857. It was supplied new (March 1932) to Mrs M FONTES who, I now know, was a widow who lived at Froyle House in Chelston, Torquay, with her son Luis and daughter Ruth. In 1932 she may have been resident in Torquay for nearly 20 years. Luis became 21 in 1933 and, inheriting, left for Reading to take up motor racing. I do not know whether Ruth left at the same time, or whether Mrs Fontes (Maria?) also left Torquay then. In 1942 she seemed to be resident at the TORBAY RISE HOTEL. As this is in Burridge Road, this would have been very close to her old address at Froyle House. She may have died in London in or about 1951. Does anybody have any information on this lady? I'd like to know how long she kept the car and when and where she disposed of it. Any recollections would be nice to hear!
