red mail Cockings, Leworthy
My wife is descended from the Cockings and Leworthy families from the North Molton, Heasley Mills area and I'm happy to share information on their descendents who came to southwestern, Wisconsin, USA.
I am researching a branch of the Shapland family who originated in North Molton and moved to the Cardiff area. The earliest ancestor we know of was a WILLIAM SHAPLAND (born around 1800 in North Molton), whose wife was MARY (born around 1802 in North Molton). I believe that William may have had a brother GEORGE (b1803). William and Mary had the following children that I know of: HENRY (1828) GRACE (1836) JOHN (1839) and MARY (1840). Henry was at various stages in his career a fruiterer, hotel manager, potato merchant and market gardener. His brother John was also a greengrocer. By the time of the 1861 census these people and their families are all in Glamorgan (mainly around Whitchurch Cardiff) - and we know that Henry and his wife JANE (nee Harris) were already in Aberdare by 1854, when their oldest daughter MARY was born. We are stuck at this point, and would love to be able to find out who William's parents were - and further back if possible. (I would hazard a guess that his mother's name may have been GRACE, as both William and his brother George have a daughter by that name, but this IS only a guess.) Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sue
Johanna Blake
I am looking for the husband for Johanna Blake. She has 4 Illg. children from 1791 to 1806. Also, any reason or suggestions why she would have 4 Illg. children? Wouldn't one be a shame for her back then? Could she have been taken advantage of, and if so, under what circumstances could it be? Could husband not be a member of church of england and thus children illg? I come from the youngest child, a son, and live in the USA and am not familuar with the "what if" or possibilities for that time period in england. Any suggestions or name of husband with documentation is most helpful. Thanks

red mail Handford Family Of North Molton
My ancestors John Handford and Maria Bawden of North Molton moved to Wales sometime after 1851. John was the son of Henry and Mary Handford. Maria was the daughter of William Bawden and Mary Comber.
The SHAPLAND Family (named believed to be derived from Parish of Shopland Essex) were in prominence in North Molton from early times and the Parish Registers show one John Shapland - son of Richard in 1539. I am descended from John Shapland with thesurname reverting to Shopland during the mid 1700s. John Shapland married Agnes Locke in 1564 and their son Thomas bapt 1572 married Agnes ?? I would like to clear this sticking point.
