George Gillard/Jillard Cranford
George Jillard or Gillard Cranford was the son of Robert Cranford and Elizabeth (nee Jillard or Gillard). He was baptised in Dittisham on 15th June 1775. He had brothers John Turner Cranford and Loud Cranford and sisters Esther and Elizabeth - all baptised in Dittisham. The family started businesses in Dartmouth and Kingsbridge. George was apprenticed to Mr King, a stationer, of Dartmouth when he was 14. He married Mary Ann Giles in Exeter in 1810 (she may have been his second wife) and they had 4 children there. George was in prison for debt in 1811. The entry in the London Gazette says he was formerly a stationer in Teignmouth but lately a schoolmaster in Kingsbridge. Any information on George or his family would be very welcome.
