WHO LOOKED AFTER GRANDMOTHER??
When we eventually found grandmother she has listed her place of birth as Newport, Devon. I now know this is in Barnstaple and believe that she would not have put this had she not known of the place as Newport is a part of Barnstaple. She states she was born in 1879 and we knew her birthday as either 11th or 12th December. She married as Janet Maud(e) RUSSELL in London. We know all about her after marriage but its her parentage and early life we would love to know about. She does not appear on the 1881, 1891 nor 1901 census lists, there is a Janet Russell in Tiverton on the 1901 census with birthplace of GLoucester but we are fairly certain that is not her. St. James Church(Exeter) is listed in a Confirmation book she had in Whitsuntide 1899 so maybe she resided in the Exeter area of Heavitree at that time. So, do you happen to have a young girl living with any of your relatives in Devon or near Barnstaple? Please help if you can. Her birth must have registered in Barnstaple but what WAS her name. I can find no Janet Russell birth in the area and neither can GRO. Marilyn.
red mail Holly Le Gros
My great great grandmother seems to have adopted the above when she was a baby. The baby is shown to have been born in 1888 in Barnstaple but no indication of who the parents were. My great grandmother, Louise Manning certainly had the child when she was 2/3 as it shows in the 1891 census. Later Holly is known as Olive Legros and then Holly Manning. She lived with Louise and my great grandmother Millicent Aurora in various places including Barnstaple, Bristol, Stroud and Chalford before, as an adult settling in Swindon where she died in 1961. She was married twice firstly to a guy named Rutter and then Bown. Any info would be much appreciated Tony

Hello all My Gt Grandfather 'Coach Painter' filed his birthplace (in 1911 census) as Devonshire, oddly his birthplace in previous census records back to 1881 is given as Hoxton, Islington, London, given that the 1911 census was completed by head of household I have to assume Devonshire is correct, he married one Sarah Vey in Oct 1871 Kensington London, in this he gave his age as 22 (birth 1849 ish), he gives his father's name as George (deceased) a 'Copper Plate Painter' one of the possible William Richards (in 1871 census April) is a Drapers Assistant working in North London, birth place Barnstaple. any help on this would be much appreciated, I do not know if he had any siblings or what his mother's name was, just hoping someone else has some info that ties in. Union Workhouse
My great x 2 grandfather, James Boaden, was an inmate of the workhouse from some time in the 1880s until he died there in 1906. The census of 1881 shows him in Princes Street, where he lived for most of his life. The entries in the 1891 and 1901 census data, cast doubt on it being him, because the surname is spelt incorrectly, ages are wrong, and he is described as a widower, which he was not. His wife Rebecca had joined four sons who had moved with the Lace Trade to Nottingham. His death certificate shows it was definitely him, seeming to confirm that the earlier census entries were simple mistakes. Any information about the workhouse in this period would be welcome.
red mail Harris family Barnstaple in 1820's
I found a grave marker for my ggggrandfather that said he was from Barnstaple. I'm looking for any information on Harris family from the area. He was John William Harris born Apr 29 1826, Anglican. Although that is the date on his death certificate, I'm not 100% sure it is correct. He migrated about 1841 to Canada and was a printer. I'm sure he would have apprenticed in the area. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Looking for info on John and his family.

red mail John WILLIAMS (c1806-1876)
"...the late Mr John WILLIAMS was an English brewer carrying on at Barnstaple, Devon..." according to info I have come across in South Australia. He seems to have married Elizabeth YEO in Exeter in 1833, had a son William Henry, and several daughters - Emma, Elizabeth, Sarah Jane.

red mail Charles Churchill (1820/1 - 1853)
I am trying to locate details on Charles Churchill and his family. Information I have to date: Charles Churchill was born in Barnstaple, Devon in 1820 or 1821. I have no proven details on his parents or siblings. However, I have found an entry in the International Genealogical Index (IGI) Batch No: C098971, Source Call No: 0590686 (RG4 4953)- which records a birth event for a Charles Churchill on 15 October 1821, Ebenezer Chapel Vicarage Lane-Baptist, Barnstaple, Devon, England. The parents are listed as father -Philip Churchill and mother as Joanna (Anna). A sibling Thirza Churchill born 28 September 1823, same address, is also listed. It is possible that Charles' parents could have been Isaac Churchill and Elizabeth Welshford who were married on 30 December 1792 in Barnstaple, Devon, England. Charle's early trade was a tailor Enlisted in London as a private with HM56th Regiment on 16 April 1838 at the age of 18 years. His regimental number was 1500. He served with his regiment in England, Ireland, Gibraltar and Bermuda over the period from 1838 to 1853. He died in Bermuda on 14 September 1853, (it is assumed from yellow fever). He left a widow, Margaret and three children, Mary, William and Theresa - all who returned to England in December 1853 and subsequently emigrated to Melbourne, Austrlaia, arriving on the "Indian Queen" ex Liverpool, England in February 1855. Charles Churchill married Margaret Murphy (an Irish lady) in St Brendan's Roman Catholic Church, parish of Birr, County Offaly, Ireland on 31 March 1843. Unfortunately, their wedding certificate does not show their parent's names or occupations. Their first child - Mary was born in County Cork, Ireland in 1843; the second child - William was born in Bury, England on 30 June 1846 and the third child - Theresa, it is assumed, was born in Bermuda in 1852 or 1853. Any information on the history of this particular Churchill family or living descendants would be greatly appreciated.
