red mail Cherry/Oldfield/Arling (Ahling/Abling)
Seeking information about the above families from Wisbech St Mary and Guyhirn from 1800 onwards. Benjamin Oldfield (b1811) was a blacksmith and publican at the Wheatsheaf PH on Turnside. His daughter, Elizabeth, was born in around 1838 in WSM and married William Cherry of Kempston, Beds. Children of William and Elizabeth were James H, Mary Rebecca, George W, Margaret, Benjamin, Elizabeth Grace and Kate. William Cherry died in 1881 before the census and Elizabeth is mentioned in the census as widowed. She is living next door to Robert and Susan Arling (also listed as Ahling or Abling) and their son Samuel (also widowed) and two grandchildren. At this point I have lost track of where Elizabeth goes. However, in the 1920 US census for Jackson, Missouri, there is an entry for a Kate Cherry of England (correct age), and her mother, Elizabeth Arling, also of England. This corresponds in part with some BMD records of a marriage between Elizabeth Cherry and Samuel Arling, although her age doesn't quite match...... Did Elizabeth marry the young widower next door and maybe adjust her age a little? I'd be interested to hear from anyone studying these 3 families if they can fill in any gaps in the story.
