William F Scott
Searching for William F Scott. Born perhaps around 1810 but unknown where. I believe his middle name may have been Francis as that name is repeated down through his children and grandchildren and I can find no other basis for that name to be used so regularly. I first came into contact with William as the parent of my Great Grandmother Bridget Ann Scott born in Kamptee, India 2 Feb 1847. Bridgets mother was Mary Ann Scott. Her birth or maiden name unknown. William was a drummer with the 25th Regiment of Foot in India when Bridget was born in 1847 as I have a copy of her birth certificate, not a lot of info on that though. I am unsure where William was born possible either him or his family come from the Borderers area?. Bridget married in India and after a short stint in England came to Australia with her family, husband and 5 children in 1883. I can find no other info about William or Mary Scott. Does anyone please have any info or ideas about where I could find information. Thank you CHeers Di

red mail Gordon-Hogarth connection - circa 1800
I am looking to confirm a connection between the Gordons and the Hogarths of Berwickshire in the early 1800s. Catherine Hogarth (mother was Georgina Thomson), who married Charles Dickens, was purported to be the first cousin of my great-grandmother, Elizabeth (Libby) Gordon Williams, whose family ended up in central Michigan. Seeking any information which would support this allegation.
I am trying to find some information on my grandmother's family. Her name was Ellen Renton (Smith) born May 1921 at 74 Castlegate, Berwick Upon Tweed, which was the poorhouse. Her mother was Ellen (Helen) Cockburn Smith, born January 1903 who was a domestic servant working for a Dr Mavour in Edinburgh & lived in the Salvation Army Women's Hostel in Edinburgh around 1926. Her mother was Elizabeth Ellen Smith (formerly Gold). She died of pnuemonia in 1914 (death registered by her mother, Agnes Gold at 30 Golden Square, Berwick Upon Tweed). The only details we have of Elizabeth Ellen Smith is that she was the wife of Alfred Edwin Smith, plumber & journeyman. My grandmother was sent to Quarrier's home for children in Bridge of Weir in 1926 after staying in the children's shelter at 142 High Street, Edinburgh & then the Salvation Army in Grassmarket, but only heard from her mother for a couple of years. She later went into service for Lady McGregor of the McGregor Edinchip , Balquihidder in July 1938. She tried to find details about her mother back in 1953 but drew a blank. All she found out was that she had a brother, Robert Smith, born 1923 who had been adopted by the Douglas family in Berwick. Does anyone recognise any of these names or addresses? If so, please let me know.
