John Giles was tried at the Berkshire Assizes in 1825 in the company of George Breadmore. They were found guilty of burglary breaking and entering the dwelling house of Geo Edwards. Sentenced to death later commuted to life and transportation. Geo Edwards was a schoolmaster and I believe he resided at 41 High Street Hungerford (Cameo House) at the time John Giles was employed by James Jelfs. Any information re above would be wonderful. Jan

Any information on John or his father William a farmer would be appreciated. I believe John was born in 1824 in Hungerford, and was the 1st Police Officer of Hugerford village. From 1851 Census - Aged 27, a Soldier. 26.4.1855 - Joined Birmingham City Police Force PC351 Warrant 2889 aged 31. 1861 Census - Aged 37, married to Sarah, no children. 7.11.64 - Aged 41 and widowed, marriage to Fanny Went aged 25 from Presteighe, Powys at St Lukes Church, Birmingham.

I am researching my Great Great Grandfather Noah Dobson who's first wife is believed to be Sarah James (father Thomas) Married on 5th August 1845 at the Parish Church in Hungerford. He later married Caroline Downham on October 2nd 1856 at Holy Trinity Church Lambwood Hill Berks. He was a widower at this time.

I believe that my grt grt grandfather Edwin Wheeler, son of Thomas and Mary, was born 19 July 1815 and christened in the Ebenezer Wesleyan Church, Hungerford, on 15 Oct 1815. James Wheeler, (his brother?) was born to Thomas and Mary, on 30 March 1818, and christened in the same church on 26 Oct 1818. Can anyone help me to find out more about this family, please? Or where I can get copies of the births or christenings?

Am trying to find out if I am related to John Ashley, born and died in Hungerford. From the location and dates I believe he may be the brother John of my direct ancestor James Slade Ashley app 01/1833 - 19/9/1902 who was christened 03/11/1834 at St Mary's Southampton. James and John parents were John Ashley (1797 - 1852) and Unity Slade (1816 - ) who lived in Southampton but then moved away and came back. William Dewey was born circa 1816 to 1821. Does anybody know anything of his parents? William married Maria Rose at Bedwyn Magna, Hungerford on 26-Jun-1843. Two sons, Thomas Rose Dewey b.1845, and Charles Edward Dewey (my GGrandfather) b. 14-Feb-1847, both in Hungerford. William died in Westcombe Marsh, Great Bedwyn, on 19-Nov-1847 of gradual exhaustion after 3 weeks paralysis; he was a blacksmith. Does anyone have any information as to the circumstances causing the paralysis? Maria remarried in Wescombe Marsh during 2nd qtr 1850 to John Harris, another blacksmith. Did Maria have any children with John Harris? N.B. I believe he had children from a previous marriage. I would be grateful for any information. David.

Trying to trace my gt gt grandfather James Little born in Hungerford circa 1821. To date after much searching I have still been unable to find his birth or marriage dates. The only other info I have is that he married an Ann (nee name unknown)who wasborn in Freystrop in Pembrokeshire(now Dyfed Wales). From the 1861/1871 censuses I know he had a least 4 children, William Little b.c.1848, Thomas Little b.c. 1852, Elizabeth A.Little b.c. 1859 and Mary Jane Little b.c. 1865. They were all born in Pontlottyn in Glamorgan, so obviously he had moved to find work in the Iron Works. If anyone has any information or connections I would be most grateful for their contact. Looking for details/history of Henry PHILLIPS. All I know about Henry is that: - he was baptised at Hungerford on 14th August 1803, the son of a John PHILLIPS, a shoemaker, and Ann RACKBORN - he was an ag lab - he married Martha DIXON at Shalbourne on 13 December 1832. Henry and Martha had at least four children: Henry John (1834), Charles (1835) James (1838) and Francis (1841). I am descended from James and his wife Jane BARNES (born at Chilton Foliat in 1839). Martha was buried at Shalbourne on 17th June 1844 and Henry remarried on 19th October 1846. His second wife was Elizabeth DEACON and they had several children. Does anyone recognise Henry or any of these other people, pls?

From - Camden's Britannia continued by Samuel Tymms 1834 At Hungerford market House is preserved a very old and curious brass horn, the gift of John of gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, as a charter of certain privileges of fishing. Another brass horn of more modern execution is kept in the town-hall. It has this inscription - John a Gaun did gie and grant the riall Fishing to Hungerford Towne, from Eldren Stub to irish still, excepting several mill pounds - Jehosophat Lucas was Constable 1634.
