red mail Archibald Cook
This Archibald Cook was born in the Kilmaurs District of Ayrshire in 1863 His father was Archibald Cook and his mother was Janet Sloan. I have have followed him up to the 1881 census when he was living with his mother and father and the rest of the family in Kilmaurs District. He was listed in the census as a brickmaker which was a departure as he came from a long line of coal miners. I can find no further trace of him. I suspect he may have emigrated. Anyone have any information?

red mail The Dutch connection
My great grandfather Archibald Cook married a Janet Sloan who was Dutch. Her mother who was Dutch born in Middelburg married a Mungo Sloan who was born in Ochiltree. Mungo Sloan's mother was Janet Keirs and his father William Sloan was born in Ochiltree. How come this Dutch connection? Surely that was rare in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Anyone have any explanations or suggestions?
