red mail Achnacarron House, rebuilt by William Mewburn in 1908 - (Kilchrenan - Argyllshire)
Achnacarron is the site of a former hunting lodge from circa 1850 - 1905 and then a larger mansion from 1908 to 1954, known as Achnacarron House on the banks of Loch Awe, between Kilchrenan and Ardanaiseig. I am trying to obtain more details of the history of the property; particularly the gardens, the architects who designed the 1908 house; details of the house itself and the inhabitants, who included the Campbell-Muirs of Inistrynich and later, William Mewburn and family who built the 1908 house as their holiday home. I am particularly interested in any photographs from the era and also in trying to trace any descendants. The Mewburns, led by William Mewburn, a wesleyan methodist from Oxfordshire and the owner of Wykkham Park in Banbury, had a son, also called William. It was he who rebuilt Achnacarron House in around 1908 for himself and his wife. They died in the early 1930's, but had a son called Guy who had a daughter called Meg Mewburn. Meg may not have married, and may have moved to Cirencester, Gloucester. They would have passed away by now, but perhaps they have some remaining family who know of some of the history. Achnacarron House had a succession of owners over the years until it burnt down in 1954 and was not rebuilt. The grounds contained a small caretakers cottage and the property was owned by several parties until it was sold back to a previous owner in 1982. In 2009, the property was sold to the author of this post.

red mail McPhee Colin - (Kilmory - Argyllshire)
I am researching the family of Colin McPhee, who appears to come from Kilmory, Ardnamuchan in Argyll. Colin was born in 1811 his parents were Malcolm McPhee and Mary Campbell. Colin married Isabella Campbell and the couple had 9 children. The family immigrated to South Australia in 1858. During the journey Colin died leaving Isabella to manage alone in a new land. I have not been able to locate Colin's siblings and establish if they also came out to Australia. I would be interested to find any connections to this family. It is believed that Colin had brothers John and Neil? as mentioned in census collection records, though both these names used the surname of their mother Mary Campbell. Also searching for Dugald McPhee in Australia son of Colin and Isabella, he was born in 1850. Dugald would have possibly worked for a time in SA. Appears he left the family fold his siblings were John, Malcolm, Colin, Margaret, and Mary. The other 3 children died prior to departing Scotland. Dugald's life remains a mystery after 5 years of searching. Noella
