red mail Signaller SAMKIN, Essex Rgt. World War I
On 13th Aug. 1916 my Great Uncle L. Cpl. Bernard George LAMPARD was killed by a German shell near THIEPVAL, Somme. Signaller SAMKIN witnessed the death. He wrote several letters to Bernard's sister, Ethel Wilson, of Platt's Heath (my grandmother) and their mother, Kate Smurthwaite, of Bognor. In one letter he said that he hoped to meet them if he suvived the war, he would then be able to tell them more about what happened. I have often wondered if the meeting took place? In one letter S. Samkin says that before the War he was a ship's steward with G.E.R. channel steamers running between Harwich and Rotterdam, he had one brother and 3 married sisters. If there is anyone out there who is a decendant or relation of S. SAMKIN, I would be thrilled to hear from them.
