red mail Durham Penitentiary
From - Whellan's History and Directory of the County Palatine of Durham 1856 1067 pp p 165 The Durham County Penitentiary a neat stone building, favourably situated in Gilesgate, was erected by subscription in 1852. It was opened in August of the same year by the reception of 2 inmates, and the chaplain entered on his duties, being licensed by the bishop of the diocese. After 7 inmates had been admitted, an assistant matron was appointed, and a laundry opened as a means of remunerative employment. The inmate being previously employed in making clothing and household furniture for the establishment. Thirty-nine inmates have been fully admitted to the institution since its establishment. Of these, thirteen are now in the house, thirteen have left and are living reputably, the condition of two is unknowm, whilst eleven are ascertained to be now leading a sinful life. Nine, however, of those eleven, remained only for a short time in the establishment. Chaplain - Rev. Edward Prest M.A. Hon. Surgeon - Mr. Jepson. Matron - Mrs Wilson. Assistant Matron - Mrs Hobson.

red mail Swinburn, Eliza Annie
Eliza was born in Durham on the 3rd February, 1841. She married John Lamont and immigrated to NZ. My mother said that her granny wouldn't talk about her family and that she had torn their names out of her Bible. Mother thought that her Granny had come from a wealthy family and they were not at all happy about marrying John. I would be grateful if anyone could throw some light on who she was.
red mail RICHARDSON - South Shields
I'm trying to find information on a Frederick RICHARDSON born in August 1904 in South Shields. His birth certificate says he was born at 20 Robert Street South Shields and that his mother was Isabella RICHARDSON. There was no mention of a father. He was raised by a family we think were called the GRIGGS but are unsure. They must have known his mother as he kept his last name. My mother-in-law Audrey(Fredericks daughter) was always told that her height must have come from the LANGLEYS which I'm assuming are related to his mother maybe. I have his marriage and death certificate's but they are of no help and mention nothing.I have checked both the 1901 and 1911 census' but with no luck. I would appreciate any help with this search. Thankyou, Danielle.
