Gavican family (moved from Roscommon to Carlisle)
(Aug 10 Green)
I am looking for information on a Thomas Gavican who was born in 1834 in Roscommon, Ireland. He was a baker by profession and moved to Scotland in the 1850's. He married Ann Smith and later lived in Carlisle where he died in 1890. Would anybody be able to help me with this man's parentage please? I think his parents may have been Elizabeth and Thomas, but I can find no hard proof to substantiate this. Thanks for your help. Michael

Finon/Finnin/Finning/Canning/Cannon
(Revised Jul 09 Green)
Hi
I'm looking for ancestors of my ggg grandfather John Canning who left Ireland for England around 1843 - 48 with his wife Ellen and their 3 young children John, Patrick, and Bridget. They settled in Willenhall, Staffordshire - after which Patrick and his wife moved to Chesterfield, Derbyshire.
We're puzzled by the name changes though - John is listed on 1851 UK census as Canning, yet on the 1861 census the same family are calling themselves Finan. Thereafter they change the names and spellings of them at will!
If anyone could help solve this mystery we'd be delighted to hear from you!
