red mail Manning Family
My Great Grandfather a James Smith was a Corkcutter in Gloucester period abt 1796 - 1867. I would be interested to hear from any descendents or from anyone who may be researching this family of Manning who had a Cork manufacturing business in Gloucester City. William Manning was born in Belfast Ireland in 1790 and in the early 19th century moved with his family to Gloucester where he set up his business. The 1851 census shows that he had by then 6 men working for him.The family used to charter at least two ships which would bring the raw cork in to Gloucester Docks from Spain and Portugal. When William eventually retired his son Theophilus took over the business and in later years a descendent Robert Manning took over the Cork making business up until well into the 1950s. It would be nice to learn that my Great Grandfather may have worked for this family.
