Harrison Family of Stockport
(May 09
Red)
I am seeking information on the Harrison Family of Stockport. Joseph Harrison (c1780-1848) was a schoolmaster at the "Harrison's Academy" at Mount Street in Stockport. Joseph Harrison was married to Sally (born c1780 Halifax, Yorkshire) and they had two children: Betsy born Saddleworth, Yorkshire c1812 and Thomas born Glossopdale 1815.
It is possible Thomas was baptized at the Littlemoor Chapel (Independent) at Glossop. Also possible that his father Joseph was pastor there from 1812-?
Thomas married Elizabeth Collier (b. 1825 Stockport) in 1841 (non-conformist marriage) and he was also a schoolmaster at the Harrison's Academy and later an Insurance Agent (Scottish Amicable Life) and Real Estate Agent.
Thomas went on to have seven children with Elizabeth. I am descended from his son Joseph b. 1853 who migrated to Australia with wife Fanny Maria Holland and son John Thomas in 1879.
I'm trying to work out whether my ancester Joseph Harrison was the same man who was arrested and gaoled for 3 years for sedition in 1820 for his part in speeches made as part of the Radical Reform Movement alongside Sir Charles Wolseley. I found an entry in Cobbett's Weekly Political Register of 1820 which covered the trial in some detail and indicates that: "Harrison, until lately, was a stranger in the county of Chester, and is described in the indictment as a schoolmaster; he formerly settled in Derbyshire, but was a resident at the time he committed the offence."
Is this just coincidence or could it be the same man?
Any other information about the family is welcome.
Thankyou
Anthony

Cooper and Bover Families
(May 09 Green)
My gt.gt.grandfather, James Cooper was born Sheffield but lived in Stockport at the time of the 1841 census. I have managed to find a record showing a marriage record in 1821 to a Martha Bover at Stockport. On the 1841 census he has 8 children but there is no mention of Martha, presumably she died prior to the census being taken. There is however a child, Jane Bover listed with the family, which seems to confirm the James Cooper listed is my ancestor. Also I found a record of Martha's christening in Jan 1802. Her parents were shown as Thomas and Mary Bover. Has anyone any information about the Bover family or the Coopers please? Thanks, Sheila
