My gx3 grandfather was born here and lived here for the early part of his life. He disappeared from the 1871 & 1881 censuses but re-appears in 1891 in Penge, Surrey. Does anyone have any information about where he was for the missing 20 years?

Particularly interested in info on his illegitimate son John Rice (a.k.a. John Rice Knight)b 1835 son of Mary Ann Rice whom he lived with at Cranham Mill and whom he later married in 1870.
