red mail Latter's Farm (Nov 09 Red)
My grandfather, Ernest Batchelor, farmed at Latter's Farm from approx 1908-1914. The farm has since disappeared under post-war housing estates and I am trying to identify exactly where it was. The indications I have are that it was fairly close to the centre of Upper Higham. The 1911 Census lists it as being on 'Higham Lane', next to Hill Farm, along with 3 other dwellings but the name 'Higham Lane' does not appear on the current map. From the name, Latter's Farm, one might expect it to be adjacent to Latters Terrace (9 dwellings) but the census enumeration numbers might suggest otherwise. I am wondering whether the name, Latter's Farm, comes from Philip Latter, who died about 1907, shortly before my grandfather began farming there.
