red mail William Wood - Gatelawbridge Quarries & Dumfries to Glasgow Railway (Jun 08 Red)
William Wood died on 24 Jan 1906. "A well-known figure has been removed from our midst. Deceased, who was seized with some internal trouble about seven months ago, was forced to relinquish his trade as a blacksmith which he had carried on in Thornhill for over 40 years. Previous to that he had worked at his trade in the quarries at Gatelawbridge (huge Red Sandstone quarries) and was also employed at the making of the railway (Dumfries to Glasgow), being present at the building of the viaducts at Cample and Carron. (1850's) Laterly he resided with his married daughter Mrs. Candlish, Glasgow Street. Member of the local lodge of Freemasons having the honour of being it's oldest member. He joined the Order about 55 years ago and for the last 15 years held the office of Inside Guard." Any further information welcome.
