red mail Formby or Formby Asparagus Growers (Nov 09 Red)
William Formby married Ellen around 1837. Does anybody have details of Ellen before she became a Formby? Also William's family, parents/brothers/sisters, live style etc. Would be very grateful. Thank you. Penelope

red mail 18th C "Lifeboat House" & Alt Maritime Families (May 09 Red)
In 1777 William Hutchinson had the old Lifeboat house on Formby Shore repaired, and installed a full-time keeper. "Repaired" implies it existed a substantial time beforehand, in which case local mariners who worked fishing vessels and small trading ships out of the Alt presumably operated a rescue service. Were members of your family mainly sailors/fishermen out of the Alt in the earlier 18thC? If so, they may have a place in seafaring history which has so far gone unrecognised. Aindows were the lifeboat heroes of the later 19th C - does anyone know if they were fishermen in the earlier 18th C? Or were your ancestors another old Altcar/Ravenmeols family who all worked local waters in the first half of the 18th C? If so, there may be an undiscovered story to tell about their role in developing the first Lifeboat Station in Britain. Also interested in Black Dog on the Shore "legends" passed down in your own family. R. Whittington-Egan turned it into a "Hound from Hell" story, which looks like he did too much reading and too little listening. Did your grandparents tell you about the Black Dog, and what did they say?

green mail Formby,Thomson (Mar 09 Green)
My Great Great Grandfather, John Thomson had four Daughters, Harriet Anne Gertrude Thomson, Fanny Florence Thomson, Jane Thomson and Beatrice Thomson. Then followed three sons, George Herbert Thomson (1875) Alfred Wallace Stuart Thomson (1877) and Ernest John Ethelbert Thomson (1880). George Herbert Thomson married Rebecca Briggs Campbell and had 1 son (my Grandfather) Arthur Thomson who married (?) Florence Mary Woods and had 2 sons Donald A Thomson and Kenneth Thomson (my father) and also 2 daughters Kathleen and Doris. All 4 children were born between 1920 and 1930. Alfred Wallace Stuart Thomson married Mary Lewis and they had a son Cyril Stuart Thomson /subsequent life details unknown) Cyril Stuart subsequently married one Joan Adelyne (unknown) and was a Pilot Airman in WW2 and was killed when his aircraft was shot down over Germany. Progeny and future life of his widow unknown, however Cyril does have a rememberance plaque at St Lukes Church, or so my research shows. Ernest John Ethelbert Thomson married Isabel Kearsley Nairn - progeny and subsequent life details unknown. All three brothers and their familys may have lived in Formby at one time or another and I would be grateful if anyone with knowledge of the family or th reapective wives mentioned above and especially photos would get in touch.

red mail Formby, Asparagus Growers (Mar 09 Red)
I am researching my family tree and looking for the family of Formby's that grew asparagus there around the late 1800's and early 1900's. I was told by my mother that we were related to the above family and have notes in my great Aunts obituary dated 1928,(Miss Agnes Lucas of Bootle, Liverpool, but originated from Whitworth, Nr Rochdale) of a Mr W Formby and a Mr Joe Formby, listed as cousins. As Agnes's brother, John Lucas was born in Ormskirk, I wondered if there was a connection.

green mail Jane Formby (Jan 09 Green)
Seeking information on my Grandmother, Jane Formby, believed to have been born in Formby, Lancs, around 1895. She married John Young McDougall, and lived in Southport, Merseyside.

green mail DICKINSON - FORMBY (Nov 08 Green)
I'm looking for information on my gt grandfather HENRY HOYLE DICKINSON born around 1835. He married an Ellinor (various spellings) LORD (b 1836) in January 1864 at St Marys church, Bury. At time of marriage Ellinor was a widow, her maiden name being MORRIS. They had 4 children: Harry, Samuel, Nelly & Richard, possibly more. In 1871 the family were living at Green Lane, Formby. By the 1881 census they had an Ironmongers shop 'H H DICKINSON' in Church Road, Formby. I believe they occupied Church Cottage which was next door to the shop. Any information on either the shop or the family would be much appreciated.
