green mail Wardle, Ellen or Eleanor, East Brunton, Wreckenton, Gateshead, Seaham (Oct 09 Green)
I am researching an Ellen or Eleanor Wardle, born in East Brunton approx 1833-1836. Sometime before 1871 she married William Potts, coalminer, born approx 1843 somewhere in Northumberland. In the 1871 census Ellen and William Potts are living in German or Doctor's Row, Seaham, Durham. William Potts was killed in September 1880 in a mining accident in Seaham. Interestingly, in the 1871 census, she has two children listed under the surname Wardle (step-children to William Potts), Robert Wardle, born circa 1856/57, Wreckenton, Durham and Elizabeth Wardle, born in Durham circa 1863. I don't know who the father is and whether Ellen's surname, Wardle, is her maiden name or her name by a previous marriage. The 1861 census shows a 4-year Robert Wardle (born Gateshead, Durham), grandson to Thomas Wardle and Ellen Wardle living in Wreckenton, Gateshead. Is this the same Robert Wardle living with the Potts 10 years later (aged 14) in Seaham, Durham? Are Thomas and Ellen Wardle the parents of Ellen Wardle? I cannot positively identify an Ellen or Eleanor Wardle in the 1861 census who might be the person I am interested in. Ellen Potts (Wardle) and William Potts had several children in their own right, including twin sisters, Jane and Sarah Potts born in 4Q, 1868 in Seaham, Durham. Any information would be most appreciated.
