Melbourne House
(Dec 08 Green)
I have from a recent enquiry re the function of Melbourne been contacted and it has been established that is was a haven for single Mum's,whether just during the war period is unknown.I have established that the residence is in South View (rd)Crowborough. On the 1901 census it was a private lodging house and came under All Saints.
My own mother was there prior to my birth and after.I was born 12.12.43 my birth was not registered until 7th January 1944 Melbourne House still being her residence, her relatives lived in Lewes!! I was born at Chownes Mead Cuckfield which I have since researched and recently visited.
The next question is does anyone know how long a single Mother would be allowed to stay there?
Also does anyone have contact with a person or people who were at Melbourne House during this time.
I am attempting to put my first four mystery years together and also to trace my birth father.
Your help would be very welcome.

House & function
(Oct 08 Green)
Does anyone have any idea if Melbourne House,Whitehill rd Crowborough was a private house in 1943 or was a sanctuary for single mothers having given birth during this time?
It is an industrial type place now. In anticipation of some clues for family history purposes.

Robinson family jarvis brooke
(Aug 08
Red)
Hi,can anyone remember the robinson family who lived in 'smugglers cottage',Jarvis Brooke, around 1950..mother rose ellen, children, michael, paul ivan, rose, richard, basil edwin, george? In 1957 they moved away.We believe michael was sent to prison for 9 mths..what happened to him after,we still hope he is alive, but despite trying, cannot locate him. Also, does anyone know what happened to Paul? The ages amongst the kids varied and none of them can remember as some lived away by then and some were too young.Paul was last seen at smugglers cottage, and possibly the next house further up the road which they moved to for a time.We believe michael and paul both went into care for a period, but think they both came out. There is a very good chance that michael and paul will still be alive as michael was born in 1936 and paul born 1944..please help, siblings and family desperate to be reunited.Anything, anyone can remember could really help no matter how small it seems.Thanks,Dawn.

Postern Cottage
(Sep 06
Red)
In the 1940s I used to visit Postern Cottage, Crowborough with my parents to stay with a relative. All I know is that her first name was Ethel and I am not even sure which side of the family she was connected to (Clark or Carr). In later years I understood Postern Cottage was perhaps kept as a "heritage" site. My memory is of a beautiful cottage with an ingle-nook fireplace. Any information on the cottage or Ethel would be very welcome.
