Wootton/Herbert marriage

Searching for any information on the union of Ellen Herbert born abt 1851 Cheltenham Gloucestershire and Alfred Wootton (variaiable spellings of Wootton).
They married in 1869 Cheltenham Gloucestershire and had two girls. They seemed to have lived apart after the birth of the two childre. Ellen can be found right up to the 1901 census still living in Gloucestershire but no trace of her husband Alfred. On all the census she states she is married but on the 1901 census says she is widowed. Any information gladly recieved.
