red mail HARRIS 64 Wouldham Street (Nov 09 Red)
The 1881 Census shows James and Eliza A Harris and their children at 64 Wouldham Street. Their daughter Lucy Harris is my Great Grandmother. I have sent away for her birth register however the 1877 Dec West Ham Vol 4a Pg 42 (which seemed most likely), and the 1875 Dec West Ham Vol 4a, Pg 86 for Lucy Rebekah Harris and the 1875 Sep Ongar Vol 4a, Pg 157 have all come back as father not James and mother not Eliza A. I even tried a search for her sister Mary A Harris and it too came back incorrect. Does anyone have any other ideas? I haven't been able to find the Parish records for that area either. Lucy was married at Victoria Docks to Herbert Andrew Head and they received assistance from St. Matthew's Mission Canningtown up to 1904. Is anyone aware if the St. Matthew's Mission records are available?

red mail James Knight (Aug 09 Red)
James was the son of Elizabeth and Alfred Knight. He was the publican of The Sidney Arms, Alice Street, Tidal Basin, Canning Town. His brother, Frank, was the publican of The Lord Napier, 6 Woolwich Road, Greenwich. Sister Minnie was the publican of The Red House, Barking Road, Plaistow. Another brother, Fred's, wife re-married Ted Whittaker of The Greyhound, West Ham. James' sister, Rose, was the publican at The British Queen, Globe Road, Stepney Green. Apparently, there was a brother, Harry, who went to live in South Africa. James' parents were Alfred and Elizabeth. Elizabeth died on 16 December 1906 and is interred at East London Cemetery, grave number 26011, square 58. I am hoping that information about James will lead me to information about another brother, Walter Alfred Knight, born in Taunton, Somerset, in the last quarter of 1880. Walter moved to South Africa, where he married Mary Ann Wallis and, at the time of his death on 27 May 1919, they were running the Chatsworth Beer Hall, Siemert Road, Doornfontein, Johannesburg.

green mail Emmerson's of Swanscombe Street (Aug 09 Green)

Family consisted of: Joseph Emmerson & wife Mary Ann with children: Elizabeth, Ada, William, Albert, Joseph, Charles, Margaret (who married McMertary), Ridgnall, Florence and Joseph's father (my 2G grandfather) Michael

red mail Vaughan (Jul 09 Red)
Would anyone have any knowledge of our great grandmother, Florence Mabel Funnelle Vaughan (born Florie Newman at 31 Gun Street, Spitalfields, Whitechapel in 1882). In 1904 she had an illegitimate child (our grandfather, Reginald Jack Hills Newman) prior to her marriage to Benjamin Henry Vaughan, a merchant seaman, at Willesden Registry Office in 1913. She died in 1929 at the West Ham Mental Hospital, Ilford but gave her home address as 96 Dale Road, Canning Town, E16. Any information would be much appreciated but we are especially trying to find out where she is buried.

red mail Surname Crush (Jul 09 Red)
Can anyone give me any information on the Crush family. Albert Crush was my grandfather he was born in 1891, married to Mary Ann they lived in Scott Street. I believe he had a sister called Lillian other than this I have little info on his family or my grandmothers. They had a large family themselves Rose, Albert, Teddy, Joe these being the eldest

red mail Butler Family (May 09 Red)
I am researching my maternal Butler line. In the 19th century they were Tobacconists & Tobacco Pipe makers. Joseph Butler in 1874 was at North Woolwich road, Canning Town and in 1878 he was at Victoria Dock Road, Canning Town. William Butler (possibly a brother) was described as a pipemaker in 1878. Joseph, his wife Elizabeth, their son Alfred and William were all drowned in the Princess Alice Paddle Steamer Disaster in the Thames off Woolwich in September 1878. Over 600 people died in the tragedy. Any information on the aforementioned Butlers would be gratefully received. Regards, Keith

red mail Mortlake Rd Canning Town (Apr 09 Red)
I am looking for any information concerning the Gower and Cawte families both of whom lived in Mortlake Rd. The Gower family are shown on the 1911 census as living there, but I think the Cawtes moved in a little later. Both families were certainly in same road in the 1920s and the Gowers were still recorded at the same address in the 1940s electoral rolls. Any information would be much appreciated

green mail Ford's Park Road (Mar 09 Green)
Frank Albert Smith (born 31 Jan 1859 in Sydenham,Kent) is recorded as being a grocer's manager, living at 1 Ford's Park Road, in the 1901 census. His children Amelia F (b 1886 Hackney), Frank A J (b 1890 Poplar), Louisa M (b 1893 West Ham), and Dinah (b 11 Aug 1898 Poplar) were living with him, and I believe he had another daughter, Sarah A (b 1886 Poplar) His wife was Amelia (nee Harris, b 25 Jan 1865,), but by 1901 Frank appears to be a widower. Interested in any information about this family, and the area. Photos of the street, and particularly the grocer's shop would be great.
