Hi, Our John b 1806, enlisted with the 95th Regiment of Foot, Derbyshire Regiment, m Mary Carroll whilst at Templemore. He was discharged from the army in 1841 and in 1847 during the famine accepted an offer from the NZ government to emigrate and as ex soldiers they formed a defensive settlement around Auckland during the Maori wars. I have a book I've been told belonged to one of my Gt-G'mothers. It has an inscription 'a small token in remembrance of her very good answering at an examination for those young persons who attend Askeaton Sunday School. from her friend & Minister George Maxwell. Nov.7th 1851.' The name is Matilda .... could be Loneys/Lewys/Lowys? Does anyone know about this name in this area,please. I have found George Maxwell, who was ordained as Curate of Askeaton in 1832, & raised to the Vicarage in 1838, where he remained until 1870.
