green mail Woodgate (May 09 Green)
My great grandmother was Jane WOODGATE (1862-1945)SEE BELOW In 1888 she married Mark ELDRIDGE (1863-1939). I have an original letter written 1880 from James WOODGATE to his granddaughter Jane (above). In that letter he mentions Aunt and Uncle of Jane as T & J Lawrance. Family legend has it that a blue-blood "Jane Peckham" ran off with the coachman and married into the Lawrance family.James may have been Thomas James WOODGATE (born about 1806 died after 1880). He had a son Thomas WOODGATE. The 1841 Census shows Thomas J WOODGATE age 35 married to Jane WOODGATE (possibly Peckham or Lawrance) age 35 (born Newcastle) running a hotel in Chatham. The household includes James Richardson (1831) Hannah Richardson(1833) Jane Woodgate (1838) Thomas Woodgate (1839)and Emma Woodgate (1841). They may have been Jane's from previous marriage (listed as son and daughter in law). The 1851 census shows a similar household at 263 High St Chatham (licensed victualer), with daughter Jane (1839) still there, but the father Thomas not there. In 1861 the son Thomas J (1839) was an assistant at a Grocers in Brompton. Thomas WOODGATE married Eliza (nee Unknown)possibly 2nd marriage Their children: Thomas (1861), Jane (1962), William (1864), Charlotte (1866) Maryanne (1868) Thomas W (1871), Stephen J (1873), James G (1875), Rosetta (1877), Joseph (1880).
