red mail Briggs and Smith families
I am looking for information on the Briggs and Smith families of Altham. Edwin Briggs and James Smith are my 2x great grandparents. In the 1881 census Edwin Briggs, a manufacturing chemist, is recorded living at Vitriol Works, Rosy Bank. The Briggs family originally came from Thornton, near Bradford. James Smith, a retired farmer, is recorded living at West View. Son and daughter respectively Joseph Briggs and Zebudah Smith (wrongly recorded in the 1881 census as 'Sebudah') married at St James, Altham on 16 June 1891. Joseph Briggs was a butcher when he married in 1891. Joseph and Zebudah later moved to Haslingden where my grandmother was born in 1896. In the 1901 /1911 censuses Joseph is recorded as a farmer.
