Hand, John
(Oct 06
Red)
John Hand born in Dorset, England mid 1870's, went to Cape Freels, Newfoundland around 1790. Died there 1824. Wife's name not known. Children: William born approx. 1798, John 1800, Mary 1805 & Silas 1813. My distant family continues to live in the Wesleyville area of NFLD and Toronto, Ontario. Hand changed to Hann around 1850. I found a John Hand born 1776) of Wm & Elizabeth (Betty or Betsy) (nee Symonds) Hand of Affpuddle, Dorset. John is the only child listed on the Latter Day Saints site, that doesn't have any death/burial info for this family. All of the other children have full info. This makes me believe that this John Hand could be the one. I think there isn't any death/burial info in England, because he left England and moved to Cape Freels, NFLD. I'm hoping this is my relative and the connection between England and Newfoundland. There is a James Spicknell of Cape Freels (1845) that came from Ringwood, Hampshire, England that married Mary Hand. If John Hand of Affpuddle is the link, than Mary (Hand) Spicknell, would be his granddaughter. My mother was a Hann at birth. St. Osmund, Melbury Osmond Church/Cemetery is mentioned often on the web for this particular Hand family. Other places in NFLD that Hand (Hanns) lived are: Cole Harbour & Greenspond, Bonne Bay, Pinchard's and Swain's Island. The men were builders (boat) and fishermen. So John could have come over on a fishing vessel. Cemetery records of Cape Freels shows their church would have been Church of England/Anglican or Methodist & Salvation Army.
