Josiah Duane Hicks was born in Machen, Monmouthshire, S. Wales, on 1st August 1844 and emmigrated to Pennsylvania, U.S.A., with his parents in 1847. He was elected as a republican to the Congress 1893-1899. He died in ALTOONA, Philadelphia, on 9th May 1923 and was buried in Fairview Cemetery. A Machen Hicks would like to contact his descendents. My GGGrandfather Thomas Jenkins farmed at Troed-y-Rhiw Farm, Mamhilad in the mid to late 19C. I'm trying to help a friend of mine to trace her mother's family. Her grandmother was Florence May Watkins and her mother Dorothy was born illegitimate in 1918 and brought up in a children's home. Florence's parents were Frederick and Charlotte Watkins of Mathern and he worked for the Great Western Railway. We believe Florence had another illegitimate child, Harold, born 1911, and that in 1921 she married George Maddox in Chepstow and had a daughter Evelyn in 1922. I am researching the Watkins family whocame from Mathern. Frederick (head). Charlotte (mother) Herbert, Frederick, Hubert, Florence(Maddox)and Gertrude(Williams or Maddox). At some time some if not all of them lived at Rose Cottage, somewhere not far from St.Tewdric's Vicarage. In fact I believe that Gertrude and her family were living there in the 1950s and may be 60s. Does anyone know of them.Florence had a son Harold and a daughter Dorothy and a second daughter Evelyn Maddox who was born in 1922. Gertrude's daughters were Marjorie and Monica. My husband's father was Harold.

With reference to my previous message dated Apr.08 I would like to make some amendments. It is believed that Florence Maddox (nee Watkins) resided at Rose Cottage, Mathern. She had 2 daughters Evelyn D.M. born 1922 and Ruth M. Maddox born 1931. Florence died on 29th Dec. 1979 aged 86 and her husband George died 1st May, 1949, aged 55 according to the headstone in the graveyard of St.Tewdrics Church. We know that someone places flowers on the grave and are anxiousto establish if any of their descendants would be kind enough to contact us at their earliest opportunity
