William Dixon - coalminer ferniegair
- Ferniegair
William Dixon is stated in the 1881 census as residing as a boarder with the Muir family in Ferniegair. He was a coalminer (and as Thomas Muir Head of Household originally came from Crossgates in Fife assume he was too.) William states b. in England. He married Mary Ann McAullay/McCawley later in 1881 in Larkhall Congregational Church. There was a pit at Ferniegair and the miners tended to follow the work. William moved to Candie pit in Muiravonside following his marriage, and assumed he hadcame from pits in Durham? area. William followed the Baptist Church and I would be interested if anyone has done any research into the evangelical movement in mining families in Lanarkshire pits. Was this also maybe a job which retired soldiers may have went into? Suspect Thomas Muir may have met William Dixon in England as his wife and elder children born England.
