Murder of George Durham 1901
- Coatdyke
I have now managed to find out more information. George Durham was assaulted on 31 August 1901 and died on 9 September 1901 from his injuries. James Miller was arrested and tried for culpable homicide, robbery, at Glasgow, convicted and sentenced to 5 years penal servitude. George Durham left a widow, Janet, a son, also George, and daughters Maggie (marrried Thomson Moore), Catherine (married William Hendry), Janet (married John Elder), Jane (married James Pearce), Marion (married Archibald Rankin), WilliamIna (married Robert Robertson) and Mary (married David Allan). I have been able to find children born to the Hendrys, Elders, Rankins and Allans. I know that WilliamIna and Robert Robertson had no children. George Durham jr. (who married Mary Marion Lightbody) also had children. I would be interested in hearing from anybody who thinks that they know of or are related to any of the above. The Pearces, Robertsons and Allans all lived in Edinburgh - the rest of the family, as far as I know, remained in Lanarkshire. George Durham jr. married at Penicuik but returned to Lanarkshire. George Durham sr. was buried at New Monkland.

The three children were "Glasgow Orphans" and fostered on a farm in Beauly, Invernesshire. What or who was the organisation? We have no birth details of James.
