Looking for descendants of JOHN MOFFAT and MARY BAIRD who lived in Watsonville Motherwell from the 1870s until the 1900s. The first information I have on him is on the 1861 census aged 13 staying in Hurlford Ayrshire. John married Mary Baird in Galston Ayrshire 1871. We next find John and Mary on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census living in WATSONVILLE, MOTHERWELL. John and Mary had 10 children. The children were CHRISTINA, ROBERT EDGAR b.1873, HUGH BAIRDb., JOHN , MARY , WILLIAM , THOMAS, DAVID , JAMES and MARGARET. Looking for information on any member of the family most of whom stayed in the MOTHERWELL area.

Henry PITTOCK & Sarah MCINTOSH - Motherwell
My great great grandfather was Henry PITTOCK and according to the 1881 census he was born around 1850 in Milford, Yorkshire which I take to be now called South Milford near Leeds. In 1873 in Liverpool he married Sarah MCINTOSH (born c1853 in Dundee) and in 1881 they were living in Barrow in Furness before moving to Motherwell with their (at that time) 5 children around 1887. The children were James (c1874), Sarah Ann (my great grandmother - 1875), Betsy (c1877), Henry (c1879), Isabella (c1880) all born in Barrow in Furness, and finally Donald (1887) born in Motherwell. Donald died in 1939 in hospital in Glasgow, and Sarah Ann died in 1962 in Motherwell. Both parents had died by 1939.
Henry was listed on census as an Iron Smelter or possibly Steel Hammerman and they presumably moved to Motherwell when the iron/steel industry was expanding. Family legend has it that they were of Romany origin but that is extremely doubtful at best.
Does anyone have any relevant information on any of the PITTOCK family? Thanks in advance.

Yule, Gray, Young & Pittock - Motherwell
My great great grandmother was Agnes YULE who was born in 1850 in Midmar, Aberdeenshire. Her parents were Alexander YULE (c1830) and Jean GRAY (c1830) and I don’t know where they were born. Agnes YULE married Allan YOUNG (born c1842, perhaps in Ayr) in Glasgow in 1871 and they had a son John YOUNG (born c1873 in Motherwell) who married Sarah Ann PITTOCK in 1893 in Motherwell. Agnes YULE died in 1932 in Pitlochry, although her usual address was listed on her death certificate as 112 Parkhead St, Motherwell, and since she died of a stroke which was presumably sudden and unexpected I guess she may have been on holiday, or visiting someone in Pitlochry.
Does anyone have any relevant information, or can I assist anyone else who's researching the same people?

Jones & McFarlane - Motherwell
My great great grandparents were John JONES and Mary MCFARLANE who were born around 1836, perhaps in Motherwell. John was a coalminer. They married in 1856, and had a son, William JONES, who was born in Motherwell in 1892 and who was also a coalminer. William married Annie Maud TIFFIN in 1915 in Motherwell, and they had 5 daughters, all born in Motherwell: Mary (my grandmother, 1916), Ruby (1919), Williamina (1921, but died as an infant), Ruth (1924 but died as an infant), and Annie (1934). Mary married John WATSON, then after they divorced she married William YOUNG, my grandfather.
Does anyone have any relevant information, or can I assist anyone who is researching the same people? In particular I’d be interested to get more details on John JONES and Mary MCFARLANE.

Mount Vernon, Glasgow - Mount Vernon
Anciently known as Windyedge (or variations of)in many historical documents. The land was purchased from the trustees of John Pitcairn by a merchant called Robert Boyd in 1741 and renamed to Mount Vernon by him in the spring of 1742.It is thought the new name was in honour of the famous Admiral Edward Vernon.
Many accounts of this name change cite a George Buchanan who purchased the estate in 1756 as being the person who changed the name, these accounts are entirely false as the Cess Tax books record the name as Mount Vernon in 1742 when Boyd owned the property.

They were mostly blast furnacemen or miners and though many have now left the area some families still remain. I would be pleased to hear from anyone with an interest. Regards, Heather.
