CAIRD William bap 1784 Fordoun KCD, Scotland - Fordoun
William was a monumental mason - First wife Betty WATSON, one son David - second wife Elspet FROST bap 1796 Peterculter, Aberdeen, Scotland. From the Parish of Fordoun by Charles A. Mollyson MDCCCXC111 William Caird lived at 7 Market Street, Auchenblae. Quote, William Caird, propietor of No 7 was a man of dry Caustic Humour-somewhat waggishly inclined. His aphorisitic sayings, though now forgotten, were appreciated by an older generation. He was by trade a stone mason, but might more properly be described as a monument maker. He was dexterous in the use of the chisel and mallet. Half a century ago, in the graveyard of Fodroun, there were, more tombstones bearing the imprimatur of William Caird tha that of any other artificer. His style was bold and original. His well-rounded, textual looking letters, with their flourished, dashes and devices, the schoolboy instinctively sougth to initiate. Here while the 'City of the dead is preserved', William's handiwork, seen in manifold forms, to the memory of others, will secure a lasting place fro his own. He had decided genius. The house was long the residence of Dr Henderson, until he acquired the property No 5 on the opposite side.
