Related to Flora MacDonald!!!!
- Bracora, Bracara
Sarah Gillies was my great- grandmother she was married Donald Gillies. In her obiturary in the Oban times, early April 1917 she is reported as saying that her mother had been the second cousin to Flora MacDonald. My great -grand mothers maiden name was Mackay and she
came from South Uist.
She was house keeper to her Uncle who was the parish priest in Bracara in the 1850's that how she meet my great grand father.
Could anyone from the area tell me where I might be able to find any documents. The Church on South Uist was not build I believe until the 1820's.
I believe Flora MacDonalds family did not live far
from my great-great- grandparents but realize this does not necessarly mean that they are connected.
Hope someone out there can help

MacDonald drumnadrochit to American Colonies in Sept 1775 - Drumnadrochit
Looking for information on the following Mc/MacDonald family, all apparently born in Glenurquhart between 1720 and 1772, but possibly associated with the Glenmoriston Mc/MacDonalds:
John McDonald was born at Glen Urquhart and belonged to the Glencoe McDonalds. At the time of the Glencoe Massacre, 1692, one of the McDonalds fled to Glen Urquhart and settled there.
John McDonald was a grandson or great grandson of that man.
He was about eight years in the Royal Highland Emigrant Regiment, and three of his sons fought with him in the Revolutionary War on the Loyalists' side. He was married twice. By his first wife he had Duncan, Alexander, Mary and Christy. By his second wife, Margaret Grant, he had James, Ewen, Ann and Ellen.
I have a 1 July 1772 birth record for twin girls Ann & Helen (Ellen) that shows the birth on 1 July 1772 at Drumnadrochit.
3rd son James was born abt 1753 and 4th son Hugh/Ewen born about 1764 (all in Glenurquhart)
The family was recorded in Dr William Mackay's 1893 book "Urquhart & Glenmoriston"
(Index : Urquhart Settlement in Nova Scotia, numbers #8 (Hugh/Ewen), #9 (James), & #14 (the father, John McDonald, also known as Iain MacEoghainn Oig)

Brewing For The Garrison - Fort William
From Calendar of treasury Books.
95 26/06/1735
Treasury Warrant to Commissioners of Excise Scotland,to stay the
proceedings against Lt Gen Wade Governor of Fort William on the
cause as below.
Prefixing - Wade's petition to the Treasury. The remote situation
of the said garrison, the unwholesomeness of the water, the spirits
sold by the people of the country and the salt provisions the
soldiers are confined to for near half the year, render it necessaryfor their health to provide good and wholesome drink. It is necessary
to brew it because of the heavy land carriage.Ever since the
Revolution, when there was no duty on malt, all prosecutions for
Excise of drink for the garrison have been discontinued upon
representations.Prays a similar stay of the prosecution begun
against him by the Excise Commissioners.

Macleors Of Glenelg - Dewar
- Glenelg
My ancestors came to Glenelg in 1740 to operate a "Smithy" at Galder Glenelg. Our name at that time was spelt "Deor" (Dewar) When children were born (1750 - 1765) they became known as "MacLeor" at their father's wish. (son ofthe lad Deor)I have a fair amount of knowledge on our family tree, but am still looking for anyone related to us. There was many different spellings of our name and the closest mixup is with the name of MacLure. Most of our family left Glenelg for Glengarry Ontario Canada during the Clearances between 1793 and 1849. I have a fair bit of research done on our family in Glengarry.

Roderick Mackenzie - Inverfarigaig
Please does anyone have any information on the Mackenzie family of Inverfarigaig/Errogie circa the early 1900s?My father was Roderick Mackenzie believed born 1st July 1906 Inverness. His father was also a Roderick Mackenzie (occupation Engineer but no further information other than stated as being deceased on my parent's marriage certificate of 1942).My father is also believed to have had a sister (name unknown)who was a missionary but contracted Bilharzia in Africa, a wasting disease and returned to a hospice in Inverness where she died.My father served in WW2 in the Royal Engineers and Royal Pioneer Corps,Army number 2183025 and finished the war as a Major having served in France,Salisbury Plain,Isle of Wight (bomb disposal)and North Africa. After WW2 he settled in Manchester, where he died in 1978.Everything is a little sketchy as he was a man of few words but my sisters and I would be very grateful for any information or suggestions. It is also possible that his real date of birth may have been 1st July 1900 as my mother used to claim in arguments that he was 'creative' with his age!
Thank you, Andrew
