Dalrymple, Robert and John
- Leslie
According to several family records, my paternal great grandfather Robert came from Leslie. He emigrated to Canada in 1814; the engraving on the family gravestone in Mount Royal Cemetery, Montreal, says he died in 1875 at the age of 86, putting his birth year around 1789. I have not yet been able to find his parents. The marriage certificate of his son John states that Robert was from Lesley (sic), Fifeshire.
One couple, John Dalrymple and Jean Will of Leslie, is a possibility, but their son Robert is said to have been born in 1794.
Robert's brother John emigrated to Canada as well, and founded a second branch of the family there. He and Robert bought the family plot in Mount Royal, and John died in 1869.
Family oral history had 7 brothers emigrating at the same time, with some going to the US as opposed to Canada, but neither my late father nor I have so far been able to find anything tying this down as fact.
