Obituary for Mr Cornelius Smith 1956 (Postmaster, Baker & Grocer at Aberlady) Extract from Haddingtonshire Courier The death took place at Roodlands Hospital, Haddington on Thursday 2nd of February after a brief illness, of Mr Cornelius Smith, J.P., the Post Office, Aberlady, who took an active interest in the life of the community for over half a century. A native of Aberlady Mr Smith held the position of Postmaster for a considerable number of years, being well known and greatly respected.For many years he served on North Berwick District Council and for 40 years was Session clerk of Aberlady Parish Church. Mr Smith is survived by his wife Minnie, his son Tom and two daughters Vera and Connie. The funeral to Aberlady Churchyard tookplace from the Church on Monday afternoon, and was attended by a large gathering of mourners. The service was conducted by the Rev Thomas Caldwell, who also officiated at the graveside. PULPIT TRIBUTE At the close of the forenoon service in Aberlady Parish Church, on Sunday, Dr Caldwell made the following reference to the death of Mr Smith: - ÒMembers of the congregation will have heard with deep sorrow of the death of Mr Cornelius Smith on Thursday last. James was married to Annie Gordon (b.1800,Crawford, Lanark), They lived in the schoolhouse attached to the school which is now the post office. He was the schoolmaster between 1826 and 1858, their children AGNES b.1822, Janet (Dirleton) 1825, Marianne (all now Drem) 1827, Jane 1829, Charles 1831, Elisabeth 1835, Isobel 1840, Alice 1843. Jane married Willian Duncan in Ormiston 1865. AGNES had three children born in Drem, JOHN MUIR b.1849 (married Margaret Hendry, Edinburgh 1872), James b.1851 (married Margaret Instant in Ormiston 1875)and Janet b. 1855 (married John McDonald, Glasgow 1884). all possibly Illegitimate (John to a William Whitton who I know nothing about). JOHN MUIR drifted into Edinburgh when his grandparents (who he lived with) died. His family lived at 13 Murdoch Terrace. My direct family line are in caps, but contact on all above welcome

According to the 1851 census, my ggg-grandfather David Darling was born 1792, Dunbar, East Lothian, a carpenter by trade. He was ordained by the London Missionary Society, married Rebecca Woolston (b. 1791 Oundle, Northamptonshire) in 1816 at Finsbury, London, and promptly set sail for the South Seas to become a missionary in Tahiti. His daughter Mary Ann married my gg-grandfather (also a LMS missionary) in Samoa in 1847. Does anyone have a spare David Darling on their tree who seems to vanish? Was he born in Dunbar? John contracted typhus fever in the winter of Valley Forge, 1778 or 1779. He had a wife, name unknown, and 3 children George b. 1770 (first m. Elizabeth Elliott); Robert b. 1771/73 (m. Magdelena Bretz) and Susanna b. 1774 (m. George Kraft). John's children had an Aunt Fox who lived in Hummelstown, PA. Mrs. Dunbar died in late 1828 or early 1829 (prior to Apr. 12)and she is buried in Hummelstown, PA (location unknown) John's children were supposedly born in Philadelphia County, PA. The family lived at one time in Hummelstown, Dauphin County.
