Bonhill In 1793 - Bonhill
From the Old Statistical Account for Scotland 65 Bonhil p 453 Miscellaneous Observations : Inchmarin, one of the islands in Loch Lomond is at equal distance from the parishes of Bonhill, Luss, Kilmarnock and Buchanan. From this circumstance it is not clear to what county it belongs, and as it pays no stipend, it is equally undetermined to what parish. It is the largest island in the lake, about 2 miles long and from half to a mile broad. TheMontrose family use it as a deer park, where they keep 200 fallow deer. The ruins of the castle, formerly belonging to the Lennox family, are still upon this Island. The person who has charge of the woods and the deerresides with his family upon it. Some years ago, many persons disordered in their senses, were sent to it as to a place of confinement; and those of the fair sex, who were so unfortunate as to give - pregnant proofs of theirfrailty, were sent here as to avoid the reproach of the world. At that time the neighbouring clergyman, who happened to be a strict disciplinarian and very zealous against fornicators, claimed Inchmarin as belonging t...

Campbell, McCallum, Burns - Bonhill
Mary Campbell born abt 1829 Greenock (Father Dugald Campbell; Mother Mary Thomson) married/handfasted to Donald McCallum. Known children - Duncan McCallum born abt 1850 Luss; Dugald McCallum born abt 1852 Bonhill; possibly Margaret McCallum born ?. Donald was a gamekeeper and probably died between 1852 and 1855 in Bonhill parish. Mary married/handfasted Thomas Burns (printfield foreman at time of Mary's death in Bridgeton in 1878) Known verified children - Agnes born Bonhill 1861; Annie born Bonhill (from census records 1871 Bridgeton) 1865. The family may have been in Hamilton before 1861 as there are as yet unverified births of James 1957 and John 1860 born Hamilton to Thomas Burns and Mary Campbell (LDS) In 1871 the family were in Bridgeton:- Duncan McCallum (head) 21yrs Fancy Dyer born Dunbartonshire Luss. Dougall (brother) 18yrs Bleacher born Bonhill Mary (mother) widow 40yrs born Renfrewshire, Greenock Agnes (sister) 9yrs born Bonhill Annie (sister) 6yrs born bonhill John McNicol (boarder) 20yrs ? born Bonhill Thomas Burns (visitor) 36yrs seaman born England, Manchester Dugald married Jessie Primose Semple in Bridgeton 1873; Duncan married Mary Torrance (formerly McFaydon)in Bridgeton in 1883; Agnes Burns married William Chanters/Charters Bridgeton 1882 Any information on this family would be great. I am stuck with the McCallum side. Assuming that Duncan is the eldest son Donald father is probably Duncan McCallum. If Margaret is eldest daughter mother is possibly Margaret. Campbell for Greenock seems no birth records/marriage records OPR which fit. Family were possibly dissenters (Free Church; Evangelists; Baptists)
