Carruthers 5th laird of Homains - Carrutherstown
I have traced my Caruthers ancestors from their arrival in America from Scotland and eventual migration out west. My lineage is connected to the 5th. laird of Holmains to a James Carruthers in the year 1494 - 1580, in Dumfries, Scotland. I know of their occupancy in Comlongon castle when Roger De Carruthers was given the charter to guard the territories in the 15th century. I am looking for information for the name of the ship port and the name of the ship that the Carruthers descendants later took from Scotland to Ireland to reach the Ulster Plantations after 1631. One James Carruthers and his wife went from Scotland to Northern Ireland. The first James Carruthers to Ireland born in 1718, and died in Ireland. His son James Caruthers ( my ancestor ) was born August 4, 1746 in Letterkenny, Donegal, Ireland, and died in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, USA. The 4 children of James Carruthers born in 1746 were: Sarah, John, James, and Andrew ( James and Andrew were twins, and this twin James is my ancestral lineage ). Their father was James and he moved his family to the north of Ireland due to unsettled condition in Scotland. When the 4 children left from Ireland and arrived in America, they were met by their uncle John who came to America in 1745. The 4 children settled first in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania in 1765. Andrew married Margaret Neely in 1765. James, the twin brother married Nancy Neely. James Carothers married his second wife Nancy Neely, in 1767 in Adams County, Pennsylvania. They lived on the Juniata River, near Mount Union, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, on a farm called the loop. James Carothers born 1746 was in the French and Indian wars, and fought bravely in the Colonial 5th Pennsylvania Regimental Army as a private. He was in General Armstrong’s command at the battle of kittanning point. Uncle John Carruthers, was born about 1726 of Over Denbie, Dumfries, Scotland, and came to America in 1745 to Pennsylvania. Their Uncle John was the first to come to America by way of Northern Ireland. This Uncle was wounded during Pontiac’s revolt, along with William and his brother Hugh Carruthers in the Colonial wars. Uncle John, William, and Hugh who came up from Virginia and North Carolina later took the children Andrew and John back to North Carolina. After coming to America, those staying in Pennsylvania changed the spelling of their name to Carothers, through the influence of a school teacher who lived in the family and taught the children. The two who went to North Carolina at an early day, Robert and John spelled their name Caruthers, dropping one “r”. If anybody has information on this lineage in Scotland, then let me know. Thank you.
