Bonhill In 1793
- Bonhill
From the Old Statistical Account for Scotland 65 Bonhil
p 453 Miscellaneous Observations : Inchmarin, one of the islands
in Loch Lomond is at equal distance from the parishes of Bonhill,
Luss, Kilmarnock and Buchanan. From this circumstance it is not
clear to what county it belongs, and as it pays no stipend, it is
equally undetermined to what parish. It is the largest island in
the lake, about 2 miles long and from half to a mile broad. TheMontrose family use it as a deer park, where they keep 200 fallow
deer. The ruins of the castle, formerly belonging to the Lennox
family, are still upon this Island. The person who has charge of
the woods and the deerresides with his family upon it.
Some years ago, many persons disordered in their senses, were sent
to it as to a place of confinement; and those of the fair sex, who
were so unfortunate as to give - pregnant proofs of theirfrailty,
were sent here as to avoid the reproach of the world. At that time
the neighbouring clergyman, who happened to be a strict disciplinarian
and very zealous against fornicators, claimed Inchmarin as belonging

Campbell, McCallum, Burns
- Bonhill
Mary Campbell born abt 1829 Greenock (Father Dugald Campbell; Mother Mary Thomson) married/handfasted to Donald McCallum. Known children - Duncan McCallum born abt 1850 Luss; Dugald McCallum born abt 1852 Bonhill; possibly Margaret McCallum born ?. Donald was a gamekeeper and probably died between 1852 and 1855 in Bonhill parish. Mary married/handfasted Thomas Burns (printfield foreman at time of Mary's death in Bridgeton in 1878) Known verified children - Agnes born Bonhill 1861; Annie born Bonhill (from census records 1871 Bridgeton) 1865.
The family may have been in Hamilton before 1861 as there are as yet unverified births of James 1957 and John 1860 born Hamilton to Thomas Burns and Mary Campbell (LDS)
In 1871 the family were in Bridgeton:-
Duncan McCallum (head) 21yrs Fancy Dyer born Dunbartonshire Luss.
Dougall (brother) 18yrs Bleacher born Bonhill
Mary (mother) widow 40yrs born Renfrewshire, Greenock
Agnes (sister) 9yrs born Bonhill
Annie (sister) 6yrs born bonhill
John McNicol (boarder) 20yrs ? born Bonhill
Thomas Burns (visitor) 36yrs seaman born England, Manchester
Dugald married Jessie Primose Semple in Bridgeton 1873; Duncan married Mary Torrance (formerly McFaydon)in Bridgeton in 1883; Agnes Burns married William Chanters/Charters Bridgeton 1882
Any information on this family would be great. I am stuck with the McCallum side. Assuming that Duncan is the eldest son Donald father is probably Duncan McCallum. If Margaret is eldest daughter mother is possibly Margaret. Campbell for Greenock seems no birth records/marriage records OPR which fit. Family were possibly dissenters (Free Church; Evangelists; Baptists)

Peter (Patrick) Ewing and Elizabeth Lindsay
- Bonhill
Am looking for information on Peter Ewing (born about 1779) - possibly the son of Peter Ewing and Ann Cook of Bonhill, or Archibald Ewing and Catharine Nielson of Paisley. I believe Peter married Elizabeth Lindsay in Dumbarton on 11/02/1815. The OPR marriage record actually records Peter as Patrick, but I'm fairly sure this was an error, as Peter (not Patrick) and Elizabeth had two children (James Ewing 1816 and William Ewing 1817) and elements of the family were recorded at the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses. It is likely that Peter Ewing died prior to the 1851 census, while Elizabeth died 8/10/1863. It seems likely that James Ewing never married, but William Ewing married Helen Sweeney in Dumbarton on 17/03/1839 and they had 8 children (Agnes, Peter, Helen, John, Mary, Catherine, William and James).
As Peter Ewing would have been aged about 36 when he married Elizabeth Lindsay he may have had a prior marriage, possibly to a Janet Ferrier of Cardross.

McSay, James
- Bonhill
I recently found the Will of my 3rd great-grandfather, James McSay who died at Bonhill Parish in 1835. He was married to Elizabeth McIntyre. I have a lovely picture of Elizabeth when she was around 60 years old or so. The Will does not name their children and it is my goal to find the children, one being my 2nd great-grandfather (name not yet known). I know the James in the Will is correct as family legend has it that he married a McIntyre and they were from Bonhill. I do not know when James was born. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Bonhill Scotland Munro Family
- Bonhill
We know that they lived in Bonhill for the 1881 Census. We know that early in the 19th Century Duncan Munro (1790-1882) came down from Inveraray and started a family with Janet McCunn that settled in Dunbartonshire. Duncan was a shepherd, his son Archibald (b1825) was a farm labourer. We would like to discover any information about where they worked and for whom. Any information would be appreciated. We have data from the 1871, 1861 and 1851 censuses but it does not contribute much towards solving whether they worked perhaps near Menteith, Drymen, Gartmore, Ardoch and Helensburgh.

Cathey family, Bonhill/Cardross Dumbarton
- Bonhill
Hi - posting from sunny Townsville in North Queensland. Following the genealogical trail of the Catheys. It has lead me to Dumbarton. Family of George Cathey & Mary McIntyre. A number of their children (daughters) born in Bonhill/Cardross in 1830s but one of their sons, my great, great grandfather, George Hamilton Cathey appears to have been born in Brandenburg, Germany. I thought it was a typo in the records at first but further checking seems to confirm his birth in Germany. Is their any account of Bonhill people going to Germany for work - or perhaps for some other reason?
George Cathey's parents were Samuel Cathey and Sarah Hamilton.
Mary McIntyre's parents were Robert McIntyre - mother unknown.
Thanking you
Trish
