SMITH, GOLD, COCKBURN - BERWICK ON TWEED - Berwickshire (BEW, County, Scotland)
I am trying to find some information on my grandmother's family. Her name was Ellen Renton (Smith) born May 1921 at 74 Castlegate, Berwick Upon Tweed, which was the poorhouse. Her mother was Ellen (Helen) Cockburn Smith, born January 1903 who was a domestic servant working for a Dr Mavour in Edinburgh & lived in the Salvation Army Women's Hostel in Edinburgh around 1926. Her mother was Elizabeth Ellen Smith (formerly Gold). She died of pnuemonia in 1914 (death registered by her mother, Agnes Gold at 30 Golden Square, Berwick Upon Tweed). The only details we have of Elizabeth Ellen Smith is that she was the wife of Alfred Edwin Smith, plumber & journeyman. My grandmother was sent to Quarrier's home for children in Bridge of Weir in 1926 after staying in the children's shelter at 142 High Street, Edinburgh & then the Salvation Army in Grassmarket, but only heard from her mother for a couple of years. She later went into service for Lady McGregor of the McGregor Edinchip , Balquihidder in July 1938. She tried to find details about her mother back in 1953 but drew a blank. All she found out was that she had a brother, Robert Smith, born 1923 who had been adopted by the Douglas family in Berwick. Does anyone recognise any of these names or addresses? If so, please let me know.
