Farquhar family, Ayrshire - New Cumnock
My great (x6) grandparents were Hugh FARQUHAR and Jean WILSON, both born c1726 in New Cumnock, Ayrshire. They had a son, John FARQUHAR, born c1751 in New Cumnock who married Jean STEELE, born c1752 perhaps in Ayrshire. John and Jean had 3 sons, all born in Riccarton, Ayrshire, William (c1768), John (c1771), and Robert (c1780). William, who was my great (x4) grandfather married Janet ALEXANDER, born c1770 in Ayrshire. They were married in St Quivox & Newton, Ayrshire, in 1792, and they had 9 children (7 female, 2 male), all of whom were born in St Quivox & Newton: Margaret (c1793), Janet (1795), Flora (1797), Helen (1800), Jean (1802), Agnes (my great x3 grandmother – 1803), Mary (1805), Alexander (1807) and Allan (1808). Mary married James MCKERROW, born c1805 in Cumnock, and they had a son, William MCKERROW, who was born in 1847 in Wales and married Annie PICKLES from Yorkshire. James MCKERROW died in 1881 in Pontypool, so I guess that’s possibly where William was born. Agnes FARQUHAR, my great x3 grandmother married John YOUNG in 1826 in Ayr. John YOUNG was a Supervisor of Excise, and he died in 1878 in St Quivox. Agnes FARQUHAR died in an asylum in Glengall, Ayr, in 1881. They had 3 children, Janet (1827), Grace (1833, Ayr), and Allan (my great great grandfather – c1842).

Laputa Row - Riccarton
Laputa Row is situated on the West side of the Ayr-Kilmarnock road not far from Inchgotrick Farm.
I have an interst in the Wilson family who used to live at "Peace & Plenty" colliers road between Laputa and Riccarton. Jean Wilson married Joseph Caldwell who was also a coalminer from Campbell Street Riccarton. They later lived at Inchgotrick Mains - now known as "Wee Inchgotrick" near Treesbanks House. Later still the family moved into "Lemonade" manufacture and my GGrandfather Joseph owned Riverbank Works in Greenholm Street Kilmarnock when he died in 1917.
The earlier history of the Caldwell family was in coalmining from the St Quivox Parish in the mid 1700's and later Galston (large numbers) and Riccarton. Other branches of the family settled in Kilmaurs and Dreghorn (large numbers) and Lugar.
As far as I have been able to deduce our family is the only Caldwell family that have been associated with coalmining - other Caldwell's have been farmers or weavers.
My earliest known ancestors are Allan Caldwell and Janet Guthrie of St Quivox Parish last known to be living at Old Rome in Dundonald Parish.
